I was working my shift this afternoon and when the line died down, I began cleaning up and prepping for the next rush. I glanced over at a guest who I had just made a tea for. She was sitting with her mom and they were having a conversation. I smiled to myself and thought it was nice that they took time to sit down and spend time together. I turned around and continued to clean and not even two minutes later, they were both on their phones having separate conversations. They each spent about ten minutes on the phone with someone else.
Although it didn't seem to bother the women, it bothered me. Have we really become so attached to others and our phones that we can't enjoy those whose presence we're actually in? The conversations they had couldn't wait until later on? It also bothered me because it honestly shows how hypocritical some adults are. Teens and millennials constantly get picked on for being dependent on their phones when adults are just as guilty.
Seeing this scenario today helped me decide what my New Years resolution will be for 2016. I will commit to turning off my phone for at least an hour every single day and just enjoying what's in front of me. Ferris Bueller state of mind.
2023: I worked at the Starbucks in Target for just about two months or so, and here I am as a TWENTY YEAR OLD thinking im so profound and mature because I was going to make a resolution to pay better attention to life.
Relax, twenty year old Liz, your life was and is fine lol
Sincerely,
28 year old Liz
